WHOLE DAMN FIRE

It’s okay if you fall down and lose your spark. Just make sure that when you get back up, you rise as the whole damn fire.
— Colette Werden

These words were my mantra for 2021. I didn’t know exactly how they’d take shape or translate into the language of my life, but I knew enough to collect them as precious kindling.

One year ago today — on new year’s day — I joined a Zoom room of kindred strangers. We voiced our shadows from 2020, our hopes for 2021, and turned them all into art. That day struck a match in me, and 28 days later that match blazed into a bonfire.

Sometimes we know before we know. Sometimes we trust before we know what we’re trusting. All years are filled with shadow and light. Thank you, 2021, for this whole damn fire

Good morning to you, 2022. Please excuse me as I go… there’s coffee to make, a love to kiss awake, and a fire that could use a match.
